Fix the gutter you have, or put in new?

If the metal is still sound, most gutter problems are repairs: a blocked outlet, a leaking joint, or a bracket that has let go so the gutter no longer falls toward the downpipe. We fix those and leave the rest alone. Replacement only makes sense once rust has eaten through along the run, because patching then just moves the leak a metre further down.

Plenty of inner-city terraces, older apartment blocks and CBD buildings drain through box gutters hidden behind a parapet. When one of those blocks or rusts, the overflow has nowhere to go except inside. That makes a failed box gutter one of the most urgent jobs we do, and we treat it that way, day or night.

The size of the problem
Swapping a few cracked tiles and repointing a short run is a small job. Renewing a whole ridge line, or a valley that has rusted from end to end, takes far longer.
The roofing material
Terracotta, concrete tile, slate and metal each need different materials and skills. Finding a matching tile or slate for an older roof costs more than a modern profile that is easy to source.
Getting onto the roof
A low single-storey roof with clear side access is quick to work on. A two or three-storey terrace with no side access, a steep pitch or a neighbour's roof in the way may need scaffolding and extra time.
Hidden damage
This is the biggest variable. If water has been getting in for months, the battens, rafters or fascia may have rotted. That only shows once we're on the roof, which is why we inspect before we quote.
